A project by Massimo Furlan, NUMERO23Prod. (Switzerland)
Performance: 7th to 27th of April 2005, Arsenic, Lausanne
“The moment I was Superman was in between my office and my bed. Unbeatable, a fraction of a second was enough to circle the globe, vanquish evil, and crash on my bed. A dazzling instant during which my “Calida” pyjama transformed into an extraordinary blue suit and red cape, and during which the pale yellow of my bed cover morphed into fields of wheat or urban landscapes. Vast surfaces where I had to vanquish the absolute evil which threatened the planet. Before going to bed, before night time, before going to School the following morning, before seeing Sonia Gerber’s blue eyes. To succeed at last, to be there, in triumph.”
Love story constructs a sequence of images without words, which – emerging from a dark space – draw fragments of a dreamlike and ludicrous story. Before our eyes, the performers seem to have come straight from childhood but to have grown up too fast, in their too tight costumes, too tall or too small, too thin or too large, too fast or too slow, clumsy.
Boys dream of Superman, a unique figure, survivor of the distant Krypton planet, powerful hero who has come to save humanity, triumphant foreigner carrying an excessive mission and heritage on his shoulders.
So boys play: they put on their pyjamas, underpants and socks and are off to adventures. But in the meantime, what are girls dreaming about? (In)different, they dream of princesses, blue fairies, they invent worlds of their own, eccentric and bizarre, perfectly out of step but also perfectly harmonious with the world of boys.
The long images of this performance express the desire of the other and the desire to be other, they present confrontation and failure, the double inversion, the dream of flying and the crash.
The team which acts in “(love story) Superman” is a collective of performers, composed of lighting and sound engineers, video makers, musicians, artistes, dancers, actors… Above all they are ordinary bodies, simply inhabited.
